My Journey to Italy
In April 2024, I embarked on a transformative journey to Italy to trace the roots of my grandfather, who left his hometown of Melizzano, Italy, for a new life in America. My adventure began in Rome, where the ancient cobblestone streets and majestic ruins set the stage for a deeply personal exploration. From there, I traveled to the breathtaking coastal town of Praiano, where the shimmering Amalfi Coast unfolded in vibrant hues of blue and gold.
The drive from Praiano to Melizzano was a highlight of my journey, winding through the Italian countryside’s rolling hills and sun-drenched vineyards. The landscape was a masterpiece—olive groves swaying gently in the breeze, cypress trees standing tall against the horizon, and quaint villages perched atop hills, their pastel-colored buildings glowing in the golden light. Each curve of the road revealed a new vista, with wildflowers dotting the fields and the distant Apennine mountains framing the scene like a painting. The serenity and timeless beauty of the drive felt like a connection to my grandfather’s past, as if the land itself was whispering his stories.
In Melizzano, I walked the streets my grandfather once knew, feeling a profound sense of belonging. The warmth of the locals, who welcomed me like family, and the rustic charm of the town deepened my connection to my heritage. From there, I took a final train to Florence, where the Renaissance artistry and elegant architecture left me in awe. As I boarded my flight back to the United States, I carried with me not just memories, but a renewed sense of identity and pride in my Italian roots.
